Abstract
The present study explores the components compatible with the Islamic lifestyle in the shared living pattern of low-income groups through an examination of the lived experiences of residents of the Tarlan-Darrehsi neighborhood in Tabriz. A qualitative approach was adopted, and the study was conducted using thematic analysis. Research data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 30 residents and local informants, exploring their lived experiences. The views of 20 experts in architecture, urban planning, social studies, and Islamic lifestyle studies were also obtained to validate the extracted concepts and themes. Data were analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding. The findings indicated that shared living in this neighborhood is not merely an economic strategy for securing shelter, but also a socio-cultural mechanism for responding to the housing crisis, livelihood pressures, and limited access to independent urban housing. The findings further showed several components of the Islamic lifestyle—including cooperation, family-centeredness, neighborhood ethics, collective participation, and kinship relations—to be reproduced within the context of shared living. By contrast, spatial density, inadequate privacy, unwanted social mixing, and residential insecurity contribute to the erosion of psychological well-being and the weakening of privacy in everyday life. The final analysis revealed all extracted themes to be subsumed under the core theme of "the reproduction of Islamic social capital in the context of shared living." According to this core theme, shared living constitutes, beyond a livelihood strategy, a mechanism for preserving and reproducing such values as mutual assistance, reciprocal support, family-centeredness, neighborhood ethics, and social belonging under conditions of economic and spatial constraints. Overall, the findings indicate that improving the quality of shared living in low-income neighborhoods requires the regeneration of indigenous housing patterns, strengthened institutional support, design compatible with cultural norms of privacy, and the realization of spatial justice in urban housing policy.
