Lifestyle in the Age of Hyperreality: A Critical Reading of Jean Baudrillard’s Theory

AbstractAdopting a theoretical–analytical approach, this study revisits the notion of lifestyle within the framework of Jean Baudrillard’s thought. Baudrillard interprets lifestyle through the logic of hyperreality, a realm where lived experience no longer emerges from natural or social interactions but is instead constituted through media representations and the consumption of signs. Meaning, in this context, is generated not by experience itself but through the endless play of signifiers, gradually dissolving the boundary between reality and representation. The findings indicate that while Baudrillard’s theoretical framework effectively elucidates the symbolic logic underlying lifestyle in the contemporary media-saturated world, it faces significant limitations in addressing dimensions such as agency, resistance, cultural diversity, and the possibility of reconstructing authentic life experiences. Particularly in non-media, non-urban, or culturally alternative contexts, his model provides insufficient explanatory power. Hence, the integration of complementary perspectives appears essential for developing a more multidimensional understanding of lifestyle.

Exploring the Relationship Between Spiritual Health and Self-Compassion with Psychological Well-Being in Patients with Heart Failure

AbstractHeart failure, as a chronic and progressive disease, profoundly affects patients’ quality of life and psychological well-being. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between spiritual health and self-compassion with psychological well-being among patients with heart failure, employing a descriptive–correlational research design. The statistical population consisted of 204 patients diagnosed with heart failure, who were selected through purposive sampling from Rajaei Hospital in Alborz Province between March 2024 and September 2024. Standardized instruments were utilized, including Ryff’s Psychological Well-Being Scale (2006), the Spiritual Health Scale by Delmon and Fry (2004), and the Self-Compassion Scale developed by Reis et al. (2011). Data were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis. The results indicated that the components of spiritual health and self-compassion were positively and significantly correlated with psychological well-being. Moreover, these variables jointly explained 47.1% of the variance in psychological well-being among patients with heart failure. The findings highlight that fostering spiritual health and self-compassion can substantially improve the psychological well-being of individuals with heart failure and should be considered as a viable interventional strategy within therapeutic programs.

A Qualitative Exploration of the Determinants Shaping Parental Supervision in Managing the Generational Gap with their Adolescents

AbstractThis study aimed to identify the barriers and facilitators influencing parental supervision in managing the generational gap with adolescents in Tehran. Drawing on Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory and employing thematic analysis, data were derived from semi-structured interviews with 12 parents of adolescents experiencing psychological and behavioral problems. Overall, five main themes, twelve subthemes, and thirty-four basic themes were identified across four ecological levels: macrosystem, exosystem, microsystem, mesosystem, and individual. The findings revealed that parental supervision is profoundly affected by changes in modern lifestyles, including technological transformations, the weakening of traditional family interactions, and increasing economic and psychological pressures. Major barriers included restrictive cultural and economic structures, weak educational and support institutions, family conflicts, intergenerational value discrepancies, and parents’ psychological difficulties. In contrast, social support, skills-based education, intergenerational dialogue, and adaptation to new lifestyle patterns emerged as key facilitators across all levels. These findings underscore that parental supervision over adolescents is a multilayered and complex phenomenon, shaped within the context of rapid lifestyle transformations and dynamic interactions between structural and individual factors. Accordingly, the design of effective interventions requires a systematic, culturally responsive, and multi-level approach aimed at strengthening parent–adolescent relationships and reducing generational gaps in a society undergoing continuous lifestyle change.

Evaluating the Impact of Healthy Lifestyle Education and Progressive Relaxation Training on Headache Symptoms and Academic Vitality among Adolescents with Tension-Type Headache

AbstractThe primary motivation of this study was to examine the effectiveness of healthy lifestyle education combined with progressive relaxation training on enhancing academic vitality and reducing headache symptoms among adolescent students suffering from tension-type headaches. Employing a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest design, the study recruited 30 male high school students diagnosed with tension-type headache from counseling centers in Tehran during the 2023–2024 academic year. Participants were randomly assigned to either an experimental or a control group. Using the Academic Vitality Questionnaire and the Headache Symptom Inventory, data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and ANCOVA via SPSS (Version 24). The results demonstrated that participation in the combined intervention led to a significant reduction in headache symptoms and a notable increase in academic vitality among students in the experimental group. These findings underscore the potential of integrative behavioral interventions—involving lifestyle modification and relaxation-based strategies—in enhancing both psychological well-being and academic engagement in adolescents experiencing chronic tension-type headaches.

Representation of the “Dining Table” and Its Relation to the Islamic–Iranian Lifestyle: A Case Study of the Television Series Paytakht

AbstractThis article explores the representation of the “dining table” (sofreh-e ghazā) and its relationship with the Islamic–Iranian lifestyle in all six seasons of the television series Paytakht. The central question concerns the extent to which the series, in light of existing cultural policies emphasizing the incorporation of religious values and the Islamic–Iranian way of life into television productions, has adhered to these normative frameworks. To address this inquiry, selected scenes from 36 episodes—featuring instances of food preparation, communal dining, and family gatherings around the table—were analyzed as cultural texts through John Fiske’s semiotic approach. The findings revealed that although the series employs religious symbols and elements reflective of the Islamic–Iranian lifestyle in its depiction of the dining table—and, in cultural and social terms, foregrounds values of interpersonal interaction, familial cohesion, observance of traditional customs within the middle class, and the avoidance of ostentation and luxury—this representation does not entirely align with the principles and moral imperatives constituting the Islamic–Iranian lifestyle.Crucial religious values associated with the act of dining—namely mindfulness against negligence, remembrance of the Creator, hospitality ethics, and respect for the sanctity of the dining table—receive insufficient emphasis within the narrative structure. In other words, the semiotic codes employed in Paytakht construct an image of the traditional middle-class Iranian family in transition from tradition to modernity, naturalizing a form of domestic life that, while culturally resonant, diverges from the normative principles of the Islamic–Iranian ethos surrounding food and communal dining.

A Sociological Analysis of the Lifestyle of Never-Married Working Women in Tehran

AbstractThis research aims to provide a sociological interpretation of the lifestyle patterns of never-married working women in Tehran. Adopting a qualitative methodology grounded in Strauss and Corbin’s (1998) version of grounded theory, the research employed semi-structured interviews with 24 never-married employed women residing in Tehran. Data analysis followed open, axial, and selective coding procedures, resulting in the identification of four core categories: causal conditions (economic and occupational satisfaction), contextual conditions (the influence of family and cultural capital), intervening conditions (structural constraints and social pressures), and strategies (leisure management, social networking, and spiritual enhancement).Findings reveal that these women, despite benefiting from occupational freedom and financial independence, experience profound concerns about future loneliness, gender inequality, and social stigmatization. The interplay among these categories constructs a model of a “new form of singlehood lifestyle grounded in satisfaction and anxiety”, wherein individual autonomy and self-satisfaction coexist with persistent psychological and social apprehensions.
